Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of a course, the student will be able to: 

  1. Increase awareness of his/her English language ability and therefore develop effective strategies for enhancing language learning and mastery.
  2. Use principles in effective oral and written English communication to address communication challenges in academic, professional, and/or business settings.
  3. Gain familiarity with cultural aspects of the American academe, and efficiently use online/offline tools and resources in a remote classroom.
  4. Create lasting relationships within the Grace community through authentic English interaction with staff, professors, and students.

Oral Communication Skills

ESO-011 Basic Oral Communication Skills 1 (2 units)

This is a basic course on survival English, introducing students to the basic sounds and structures of the language. Themes related to work, daily life, and ministry are employed to expose students to the sounds of the English language and enable them to acquire the necessary vocabulary for survival in an English-speaking environment.

This course is for Level G1 students.

 

ESO-021 Basic Oral Communication Skills 2 (2 units)

This course introduces students to a higher level of English vocabulary and structures in a variety of communicative settings. Language functions and themes are introduced with key vocabulary to enable students to express themselves more fluently in spoken English.

This course is for Level G2 students.

Prerequisite:

G1 students must first take ESO-011.

 

ESO-031 Oral Communication Skills 1 (2 units)

This course is an introduction to more structured English in a variety of social and academic settings. Students are exposed to more complex varieties of English and standard usage in social and academic interactions. Some introduction to basic public speaking is also provided.

This course is for Level G3 and G4 students.

Prerequisites:

G2 students must first take ESO-021.

G1 students must first take ESO-011 and ESO-021.

 

ESO-041 Oral Communication Skills 2 (2 units)

This course introduces students to more complex vocabulary and grammar usage in social and academic settings. Common idiomatic expressions and phrases in American usage, along with upper intermediate vocabulary, are further introduced. Students are also provided opportunities for public speaking and spontaneous interaction in various settings.

This course is for Level G4 students.

Prerequisites:

G3 students must first take ESO-031.

G2 students must first take ESO-021 and ESO-031.

G1 students must first take ESO-011, ESO-021 and ESO-031.

Grammar and Writing Skills

ESG-012 Basic Grammar (3 units)

This course introduces students to basic grammatical forms like parts of speech and their usage. Other basic grammar items are also introduced within the context of writing. Students are given opportunities to practice using newly acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures in common settings like work, daily life, and ministry, through oral and written language tasks. Reading tasks are provided to accelerate development of target skills.

This course is for Level G1 students.

 

ESG-022 Basic Grammar and Composition (3 units)

This course teaches a variety of grammatical structures applied in different settings. Progressive grammar items like basic verb tenses are introduced in detail. Language functions in writing are taught within an academic setting. Reading tasks in the lower intermediate level are provided to accelerate development of target skills.

This course is for Level G2 students.

Prerequisite:

G1 students must first take ESG-012.

 

ESG-032 Grammar and Composition (3 units)

This course teaches more complex grammatical structures applied in different settings. Progressive grammar items like continuous verb tenses are introduced. Language functions in writing are taught within an academic setting. Reading tasks in the higher intermediate level are provided to accelerate development of target skills.

This course is for Level G3 and G4 students.

Prerequisites:

G2 students must first take ESG-022.

G1 students must first take ESG-012 and ESG-022.

 

ESG-042 Grammar and Rhetoric (3 units)

This course teaches complex grammatical structures applied in a variety of settings. Critical grammar items like perfect verb tenses and conditionals are introduced. Language functions in writing are taught within an academic setting. Reading tasks in the advanced level are provided to accelerate development of target skills. This course is also an introduction to rhetoric and advanced academic writing.

This course is for Level G4 students.

Prerequisites:

G3 students must first take ESG-032.

G2 students must first take ESG-022 and ESG-032.

G1 students must first take ESG-012, ESG-022, and ESG-032.

 

ESG-052 Advanced Grammar and Rhetoric (3 units)

This course is a prerequisite to business writing courses in the ESL program. A variety of complex grammatical items is introduced in and social and academic context. Samples of reading texts from existing GSOT courses are used as springboard for writing activities. Students are also introduced to rhetorical devices that enable them to compose effective academic research texts, as well as professional writings.

This course is for Level G5 students.

Prerequisites:

G4 students must first take ESG-042.

G3 students must first take ESG-032 and ESG-042.

G2 students must first take ESG-022, ESG-032, and ESG-042.

G1 students must first take ESG-012, ESG-022, ESG-032, and ESG-042.

Reading and Study Skills

ESR-033 Introduction to Academic Reading and Study Skills for Distance Learning (3 units)

This course provides students with common reading and study tools for academic success in an online academic environment. Students are exposed to online resources used in Grace, while at the same time given the opportunity to perform hands-on tasks that develop academic reading and study skills in a distance learning setting. Some exercises on speed reading and effective study strategies are also given, along with basic academic research skills. Prerequisites:

G3 students must first take ESG-032.

G2 students must first take ESO-031 and ESG-032.

G1 students must first take ESO-021, ESO-031, and ESG-032.
